Liber Novus: Study Circle
C.G. Jung’s Liber Novus is, in many ways, a singular and extraordinary work. At its core, it stands as both a testimony to—and a product of—Jung’s profound confrontation with what he later termed “the collective unconscious.” The book unfolds as a series of active imaginations: vivid inner dialogues with his soul and its many-sided, personified reality.
At the same time, Liber Novus documents a deep inner upheaval—a dissolution of Jung’s former identity and worldview, and a passage into a radically new relationship to self and world. This transformation became the foundation for his entire later life and work. As Jung himself writes in his memoirs:
“The years in which I pursued the inner images were the most important years of my life… My entire later work consisted of elaborating and working through what burst forth from the unconscious in those years… This was the primal material of a life’s work.”
Both in content and form—with its striking imagery, calligraphic script, and illuminated manuscript style—the work gives the impression of something that reaches beyond the ordinary. It is no surprise that Liber Novus has fascinated readers since its publication in 2009.
Yet the book seems to call for more than admiration. It invites participation. It asks something of us.
This study group is therefore not only about understanding Jung’s experiences and insights, but also about engaging them personally. How might these ideas speak to our own lives today? What relevance do they hold in a postmodern and often turbulent world?
Our aim is to approach Liber Novus as a living work—one that can illuminate both the psyche and the conditions of our time.
